Well Played

Well Played by Jen DeLuca
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

** spoiler alert **

I went back and forth on my rating for Well Played and ended up at a solid 3 stars. I really enjoyed Stacy and loved getting to go back to the Willow Creek Ren Faire. In addition, we get to attend Emily and Simon’s wedding and see more of Mitch and April (book 3!), which I definitely have no complaints about. I liked Daniel, once we actually met him. That was one of my issues – besides a very short interaction at the beginning, the first half of the book is just Stacy going through the year emailing and texting with Daniel-Pretending-to-be-Dex. Well Played is first person from Stacy’s POV, so we don’t really get anything from Daniel until that 46% mark. I’ve found that for first person POV to work for me, I have to be able to either connect with or relate to the other MC through the FP POV character’s eyes. I didn’t get that in the whole first half and I wanted more. shrug.

And to be honest, I probably could have gotten past the catfishing storyline except that Daniel doesn’t grovel for it. Like at all. Sure he apologizes but then he just…disappears. And Stacy is the one that goes to him. Then when we find out he still wasn’t completely honest with Stacy, he doesn’t even fight for her! He just leaves! And I’m sorry (not sorry), but sending an “I’m sorry I hurt you and I know we’re over but I love you” email after taking off is NOT ENOUGH. I wanted him on his damn knees. And once again, Stacy is the one to go after him. I really wanted to see growth in Daniel that second time around and there just wasn’t any.

All that said, I was happy with Stacy’s decision to go after what she wanted – not just Daniel, but the life on the road that he offered her. And I do understand that part of Daniel’s reason for leaving was that he didn’t believe she wanted what he’d offered, but that didn’t stop me from being VERY disappointed in him. Because he really fucked up. But they’re also just really cute together. So while I can’t say I loved this book, I can say parts of it were very enjoyable and I still stayed up way later than I should have to finish it.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
