Spoiler Alert by Olivia Dade
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I’ve been trying to figure out how to convey all my feelings about Spoiler Alert, and I’m not sure I’ll succeed, but I’m gonna try.
Olivia Dade writes amazing stories about fat women living their kickass lives, having great sex, and finding love and that means so much to me. It also kind of turns me into a puddle of emotion. I mean I had tears in my eyes by the damn dedication. But, like, in a good way.
Spoiler Alert is the story of April Whittier, geologist, recently-gone-viral Gods of the Gates cosplayer, and Gates fanfic writer Unapologetic Lavinia Stan, and Marcus Caster-Rupp, star of the Gods of the Gates TV series. Beautiful, if a bit dim. At least that’s what the world sees. In private, Marcus is a serious actor, secret smart boi, and fanfic writer Book!AeneasWouldNever. Marcus knows he can never chance his career by revealing himself, especially to his best friend Unapologetic Lavinia Stan. When April’s Lavinia cosplay goes viral on Twitter and Marcus makes the decision to ask her out as himself, his two worlds collide in a way he could never imagine.
Truthfully, Marcus is a beautiful insecure cinnamon roll, and I would protect him with my life. Now don’t get me wrong, he makes terrible decisions. He lies and hides his identity from April and, really, everyone. So like, truly terrible decisions. BUT they are made out of fear of judgement and rejection, so my soft ass heart melts anyway. And the way he wants and loves April is just… chef’s kiss
April is who I want to be when I grow up. She’s smart and confident and comfortable in her own skin while dealing with the trauma of living in a society that hates fatness. She takes the leap to own her fandom and reveals herself to her online friends (and the world) when she posts her cosplay on Twitter. And while Marcus’s insecurities cause him to fear judgement from everyone, she only ever really cares what he thinks. Also, she’s learned to take no one’s shit. My idol.
Spoiler Alert is an ode to fandoms everywhere, fatness, love, and knowing your self-worth. 💕
CWs: There are multiple references to fat shaming and both April and Marcus deal with the trauma of emotionally abusive parenting throughout the book.
